كيف يمكن لك أن تدخل سوق العمل كمترجم مستقل؟
لعل هذا السؤال هو الأكثر شيوعاً مما يصلني من حديثي التخرج أو حتى المترجمين وأحياناً الطلاب. ولكي نجيب عليه لا بد أولاً من الاتفاق على المفهوم العام لعبارة "المترجم المستقل".
عندما تكون موظفاً، هناك حقوق ومسؤوليات محددة يجب مراعاتها ضمن عقد العمل. منها التقاعد والتأمين الصحي وساعات العمل والراتب الشهري الثابت ومكان العمل المحدد. يكون هذا العمل قائماً على عقد العمل الذي يحدد المسؤوليات والواجبات والحقوق لكلا الطرفين: الموظف وصاحب العمل. أما العمل المستقل، فهو العمل الذي يقدم فيه العامل خدمة لمتلقيها دون وجود عقد رسمي للعمل ودون تحديد الحقوق العمالية التي اعتدنا على سماعها في نظام العمل الرسمي. تستطيع بما أنك عامل مستقل التعامل مع من تشاء من عملاء وفي الوقت الذي تشاء. وتستطيع أيضاً طلب ما تشاء من أجور والاتفاق على شروط كل خدمة على حدة. تستطيع أيضاً رفض التعامل مع عملاء معينين أو الاعتذار عن تولي مهمة ما لعميل معين.
والمترجم المستقل في هذا المفهوم هو الشخص المهني الذي يتمتع بقدرات في الترجمة بين اللغات ويقدم خدماته على هذا الأساس في حدود استطاعته وقدرته وخبرته. ولكي تكون مترجماً مستقلاً، يجب أولاً أن تكون مترجماً. لقد اعتدنا في البيئة التعليمية على أنَّ الدرجات الممنوحة في المواد الدراسية هي التي تشهد لنا بقدراتنا في الترجمة، أما في واقع العمل المستقل، فعادة ما يقدم العميل في كل مرة للمترجم المستقل عينة لترجمتها أو يطلب إليه تقديم نماذج من أعماله السابقة للتأكد من مهاراته في الترجمة. إذن السؤال هنا: ما التوقعات التي هي لدى العميل التي يجب على المترجم أن يلبيها لكي يدخل في علاقة العمل المستقل مع العميل المرتقب؟
يجب أولاً على المترجم المستقل أن يتمتع بمهارات أساسية في اللغة الأجنبية واللغة الأصلية أيضاً. فالعملاء يتوقعون منك أن تكون قادراً على فهم الموضوع فهماً كاملاً ثم ترجمته إلى لغة سليمة قواعدية خالية من الأخطاء المطبعية والقواعدية. إذن، العامل الفيصل في اختيار العميل للمترجم المستقل هو السلامة اللغوية واتقانها. في المرتبة الثانية تأتي معرفة المترجم المستقل بمتطلبات العميل المعرفية. فترجمة وثيقة دولية عن حقوق الإنسان أو التنمية تتطلب معرفة بمصطلحاتها ومفهوماتها. وكذلك الأمر في ترجمة الوثائق المتخصصة مثل القانونية، والإدارية والمحاسبية وغيرها. وهنا تكمن المشكلة التي يتغاضى عنها كثير من حديثي التخرج. إنَّ حصولك على درجة جامعية في الترجمة أو اللغة الإنجليزية أمر في غاية الأهمية، لكنَّه مقدمة إلى متطللب لا يقل أهمية عن ذلك وهو الاطلاع على مستجدات الحياة وميادينها المختلفة. ومن هنا نقول إنَّ المترجم المستقل الحصيف هو الذي يحرص على تجديد بضاعته، أو بمعنى آخر الدراسة الدائمة لما لا يقل عن ثلاث ساعات يومياً في مجالات الحياة المختلفة. فلا بد من فهم المفهومات في الاقتصاد والتنمية والقانون وغيرها. وهنا يتميز المترجم المستقل المجتهد عن غيره، إذ يدرس كل ما يقع بين يديه من وثائق تفيده في تعزيز تلك المفهومات في عقله. على جانب المهارات، لا بد للمترجم المستقل أن يعرف كيفية التعامل مع البرامج الحاسوبية الأساسية إضافة إلى برامج الترجمة المستعينة بالحاسوب. لا بد له أيضاً من معرفة التنسيق في الوثائق والمستندات وقد يحتاج في بعض الأحيان إلى التعاون مع مصممين غرافيين لكي يجهزوا له الترجمات ضمن الصور أو الرسومات. ومن المهارات الإدارية المطلوبة اتقان ضبط الجودة والرقابة على الجودة.
جاز لنا أن نسأل: كيف للمترجم المستقل أن يتأكد من أهمية موضوع يدرسه في العمل المستقل؟ الإجابة على هذا السؤال ليست مباشرة ولا سهلة. لكنني أقترح أن يسأل غيره من المترجمين من أصحاب الخبرة عن الموضوعات حديث الساعة لكي ينكب عليها ويدرسها. وعليه أن يستفيد من خبرات المترجمين الآخرين فربما لدى بعضهم قوائم بالمفهومات والمصطلحات الدارجة وعليه تعلمها وحفظها عن ظهر قلب.
بعد أن تكون قد بنيت لنفسك هيكلاً راسخاً من خلال التعلم الذاتي وأصبجت لديك القناعة بقدرتك على الترجمة، يجب البحث عن العملاء. ليست هناك طريقة ثابتة لذلك. فربما تبحث في الإعلانات المنشورة التي يطلب أصحابها مترجمين مستقلين أو ربما تتواصل مباشرة مع جهات معينة تعرف أنها تطلب المترجمين. بعض المترجمين المسقلين يعرضون نماذج عن أعمالهم لمكاتب الترجمة والعملاء لعل أحدهم يبدي اهتماماً بخدمات المترجم المستقل. وفي العادة، إذا انبهر العميل بعملك فسوف يوصي بك لجهات أخرى. منواقع تجربتي الشخصية، انتسبت إلى مواقع الترجمة على الإنترنت وأنشأت مدونة أعرض فيها أعمالي وحصلت بالفعل على أعمال مستقلة. ربما يكون ذلك مفيداً لك أيضاً.
الخلاصة أنَّ المترجم المستقل لا يتبع صاحب عمل معين بل يتعامل مع أنواع من العملاء لكل عميل منهم حاجاته وطلباته. وعلى المترجم المستقل أن يتمتع بالمعرفة والمهارات المطلوبة. ولكي يحصل على أعمال متكررة، عليه أن يحافظ على الجودة في العمل ومراعاة الوقت إضافة إلى السعي وراء العملاء بشتى الطرق من خلال المترجمين المحترفين مثلاً أو شركات الترجمة أو التواصل مع العملاء مباشرة.
How can you become a freelance translator?
I get this question most often from recent graduates, translators, and students. First, let's agree on the general concept of "freelance translator".
As an employee, you have specific rights and responsibilities that must be taken into account in the employment contract. It includes retirement plans, health insurance, working hours, a fixed salary and a particular workplace. Work is based on a contract that outlines the responsibilities, duties, and rights of both parties: employee and employer. Freelance work is when the worker provides a service to a recipient without a formal contract of work and without specifying the labor rights we're used to hearing about in the official labour system. As a freelancer, you can work with as many clients as you want. You can also ask for specific fees, and agree on the terms of each service separately. You can also refuse to deal with certain clients or apologize for taking on a job for them.
The freelance translator in this concept is a professional who can translate between languages and provides his services within the limits of his skills, abilities and experience. A freelance translator must first be a translator. Normally, in the educational environment, we are taught that the grades awarded in our academic classes show our translation skills, but in freelance work, usually the client gives the freelance translator a sample to be translated or asks him to provide samples of his previous work to ensure that he has good skills. So what does the client expect from the translator before they enter into a freelance relationship?
To become a freelance translator, one must possess basic foreign language and native language skills. It is essential to understand economics, law, etc. A hard-working freelance translator stands out in this regard, since he studies everything that falls in his hands, as it strengthens those concepts in his mind. In terms of skills, freelancing translators should know how to work with basic computer programs as well as computer-assisted translation programs. A translator needs to know the formatting of documents, and if necessary, might need to collaborate with graphic designers to prepare translations within images and graphics. The administrative skills required are quality assurance and quality control.
