Orphaning in translation
In translation studies, "orphanisation" refers to a specific type of translation problem or challenge that occurs when a translated text becomes disconnected from its source or original context. It can happen when a translated work is divorced from its original cultural, historical, or linguistic context, leading to a loss of meaning, nuance, or intended message. More specifically, it is a process whereby the semiotic network of a text is completely lost after translation, as all connections with the semiotic cultural environment of the original text cannot be reestablished in the target language. See Aburisha (jostrans.org)
The term "orphaning" highlights the metaphorical separation between the translated text and its source. Just as an orphaned child lacks the support and guidance of their parents, an orphaned translation is detached from the original work's intended meaning and cultural framework.
Orphaning can occur due to various factors, such as inadequate knowledge of the source language and culture, the translator's personal biases or preferences, limitations in the target language, or pressures to conform to the norms and expectations of the target audience. It can lead to mistranslations, misinterpretations, or even the omission of important cultural references, idiomatic expressions, or literary devices present in the original text.
Translation scholars and practitioners strive to minimize orphaning by emphasizing the importance of fidelity to the source text and its cultural context. They promote strategies such as cultural adaptation, localization, and considering the target audience's expectations while maintaining the essence and integrity of the original work.

A short story by Mar Delaplume
July 31, 2023
In a world plagued by fear and despair, a man named Gabarosh woke up one morning feeling a profound change within himself. A voice echoed in his soul, declaring, "You are the TranKarta. Go! Go!"
Confused yet emboldened, Gabarosh stepped outside and addressed the people, "I am the TranKarta." The crowd initially remained silent; their eyes filled with skepticism. They had grown up...-

An old almanac sits on the table, and the young woman's fingers are quivering as they flip through the yellow pages. The 20th of May, a Sunday, is where she lets her finger down. Tears began to fall, and the paper soon became soggy. Philippa's husband Christophe died a year ago today, leaving her and their son Jacques with nothing except a small farm and a cow to get by. Since then, she has learned to keep her emotions under wraps and keep her strength and composure in check....-

by MohammedThe meat
In a city called Potorkal, there once lived a happy couple. The weekend is here, and they are just planning for a joyful afternoon. The husband asks his wife what she would cook for lunch, to which she suggests rice and mutton. He reaches into his wallet, but he can only find a little to get through the remaining ten days of the month; there's no way meat will be on the menu this week.
The woman’s face glimmers with a cunning smile as this crazed idea...-
